What does the first MEV lawsuit initiated by the US Department of Justice mean?

The U.S. Department of Justice accused the two brothers of planning to attack the Ethereum trading robot, and accused them of seeking to implement electricity fraud and conspiracy. In essence, the two brothers have found a method to aim at the first trading robot in the process of being called maximum extraction value (MEV). It refers to the amount of funds that can be squeezed in the process of block production through ordering transactions.

MEV itself is controversial, but it may be a rich profit dominated by automated robots, and they are often at the expense of users, which is also part of the reason why so many people in the encrypted community are anxious to condemn the Doj lawsuit. However, this is not like Robin Han, the two brothers of Anton and James Peraire-Bueno from Bedford, Massachusetts, do not steal funds from the rich and then give it to the poor.

As shown in the documents of the Ministry of Justice,The brothers earned about $ 25 million in at least eight separate transactions. According to the Ministry of Justice, this was a carefully planned and premeditated conspiracy. They set up an empty shell company and look for safe money laundering methods to avoid being discovered. This very technical lawsuit explains the process of the use of vulnerabilities in detail.

“They use the defects in MEV BOOST to push the invalid signature to the preview package. This provides unfair advantages through vulnerabilities,” said the Ethereum Foundation and former Flashbots employee Hudson Jameson in an interview.Jameson added that the PERAIRE-BUENO brothers were also running their own verification device when extracting MEV, which violated the gentleman agreement in the MEV circle.

“As far as we know, no one else in the MEV ecosystem does these two things at the same time,” he added.”What they do is not just to abide by the text and unwritten rules of MEV extraction.”

Anonymous Researcher Banteg said: “This is not the story of Robin Han, because they did not pay the money to the person who withdrew the money to Mevers.”

At a more technical level, the brothers can use the open source software called MEV-BOOSTS built by MEV company Flashbots, which enables them to understand how MEV robots are bidding in different ways.(MEV-Buost is an open source protocol that allows different participants to compete for the most valuable blocks to “build” by sorting transactions.).)

“Through visiting the block, malicious proposals can extract transactions from the stolen block and use them in their own blocks, so that these transactions can be used. In particular, malicious proposals have built their own blocks and destroyed it.The sandwich robot and effectively stole their money.

The core of the Ministry of Justice’s lawsuit is that the brothers found a method of signing false transactions to implement the plan. The document reads: “The purpose of this false signature is to deceive the relay and let it publish the content of the proposed block to the defendant prematurely, including private transaction information.”

A cryptocurrency researcher required to be anonymous said: “I think the ineffective block head will become a pointer to balance all.”

Jameson said: “I think the indictment shows this, so SDNY is very proficient in this aspect, and clearly lists the place where they messed up and imply the inevitability of MEV in the blockchain. This may actually be possible. It’s a good thing “”

Others also noticed the technical complexity of Doj litigation. This does not seem to be a complaint on the MEV or Ethereum itself, but to make a profit by trying to obtain information by unfairness.

In an interview, Bill Hughes, the general legal adviser of Consensys: “If you want Ethereum to be a ‘dark forest’, the predators on the chain compete with each other, then you may not like this prosecution.”I think there are only a few people in fact.

“All the defendants prepared for the attack, and their trials that they completely awakened afterwards, including a large number of guilty Google search, helped the government to prove that they were intentionally stolen.Oops.

Nevertheless, others still believe that the use of MEV robots aimed at sorting trading is fair. The anonymous researcher said: “MEV robots and block builders are bullied by block proposals, which is a bit difficult to sympathize, just like they bully the end user.”

Jameson said that the Ethereum community should try to minimize MEV as much as possible, but this is a problem that is difficult to solve. At present, MEV is “inevitable.”

“Before it can be destroyed, let’s study it. Let us clarify it. Let us minimize it. Since it does exist, let us be as open as possible so that anyone can participate in the same rules to participate in the same rules”He said.

Ari Juels, a professor at the University of Science and Technology of Cornell University, said that if there is still a line of hope, the Flashbots team can fix the errors that cause attacks quite quickly.

“There is no lasting effect,” he added.“Of course, what happened is ironic: thieves steal money from the sandwich robot, and from the perspective of many people in the community, the sandwiches of the sandwiches themselves are exploiting users themselves.”
