Vitalik Buterin: Blockchain verification is not the Rollup solution

Author: Martin Young, Cointelegraph; Compilation: Songxue, Bit Chain Vision Realm

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, triggers discussions on how to classify various Layer-2 extension solutions, claiming that the verification of the blockchain is not a real Rollup solution.

January 16th,Buterin agreed to comments on the X (former Twitter) of the founder of the Rollup solution of Ethereum TAIKO. He said whether Ethereum Rollup uses another data chain to achieve data availability -such as modular blockchain CELESTIA -That is the verification of Ethereum.

“This is correct,” Buterin replied.”The core of Rollup is unconditional security guarantee: Even if everyone else opposes you, you can take your assets.”

“If the availability of data depends on the external system, you can’t do this,” he added.

Validium is an Ethereum expansion solution that uses zero -knowledge proof to realize under -chain transactions. At the same time, it relies on the Ethereum main network for security and verification.

Unlike zero -knowledge Rollup (verifying them on Layer2 on Layer2 and verifying them on Ethereum and other Layer1), the Validium network will not publish transaction data to L1.Instead, Validiums will release a valid encryption certificate of transactions that this setting aims to achieve higher scalability because complete transaction data does not need to be stored on the chain.

However, verification depends on the honesty of the operator to publish a proof, and data availability may be reduced compared to Rollup.

The network such as Celestia uses a modular blockchain consisting of data availability layers and verification layers -the latter uses Validiums to achieve fast and private transactions.

In an article on the centralized social media on January 16, Buterin shared a chart to adjust some terms, such as “security preferences” and “scale preferences”, “strong” and “light” and “light””It is” more concise “.

Not everyone agrees with Buterin’s proposal, including the Ethereum community member Ryan Berckmans, who claims that Validium is the Layer2 network.

“Layer2 is a chain based on Ethereum,” he said.”I will debate with anyone who insists on DA [data usability] on Ethereum to become L2.”

“This is a new industry. We can define ‘L2’ as any meaning we want,” he continued.”The most useful definition of L2 includes rollup and verification.”

Contrary to Berckmans, Layer2 Industry Analysis Platform L2Beat believes that Validuims is not L2.

“Verification and optimization are not L2: By publishing data on L1, they introduced additional trust assumptions above L1.”
