Musk has long disliked Microsoft, and the same is true for prosecuting OpenAI this time

Just Friday, Musk sued OpenAI.

On the surface, Musk is accusing OpenAI of being obsessed with making money now, but when he looks closely, he always feels that he is having a fight with Microsoft again.

This is not the first time that Musk and Microsoft cannot get along. They have to swear by Microsoft when buying a new computer.

But let’s first review what happened this time.

Elon Musk sued OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman in court on March 1, Beijing time, alleging that they violated the agreement signed when OpenAI was founded, that technology was developed for the benefit of humanity rather than profits.

OpenAI’s recent relationship with Microsoft has hurt the company’s initial goal of public, open source AGI.

The lawsuit was filed in the San Francisco Superior Court, accusing OpenAI and its executives of breach of contract and fiduciary obligations and attempts to force OpenAI to stick to its original mission.

Musk also demanded a ban to prevent OpenAI and Microsoft from profiting from the company’s general artificial intelligence technology.Additionally, Musk is seeking compensation, the amount is unclear, and said that any compensation in the lawsuit will be provided to nonprofits or charities

Musk also presents emails with Altman as evidence of litigation.

The email shows early plans and discussions about Musk and Altman’s creation of a security-centric AI lab.The discussion covers missions, expansion plans, governance structures and how they communicate and adapt their progress publicly.

Altman also proposed strategies to wait for the right time to process regulatory letters and considered issues regarding the constraints required for world security.

“Only OpenAI knows the internal details of GPT4, and Microsoft knows them in terms of information and beliefs,” Musk wrote in the lawsuit.

Therefore, GPT4 is the opposite of “open AI” and its closure is for legitimate business reasons: Microsoft wants to make money by selling GPT4 to the public, and it is impossible for the public to use the technology for free.

Contrary to the founding agreement, the defendant chose to use GPT4 not for the benefit of humanity, but as a patented technology to maximize profits for the world’s largest company.

A brief summary of this sentenceMusk feelsOpenAIForget the roots, not only is it not open source, especially after Microsoft invested, Microsoft and OpenAI are utilizing it together.GPTmake money.

Not only now, Musk has long been unable to get along with Microsoft.

First of all, I just mentioned that on February 27, Musk complained that Win11 must log in to a Microsoft account when using a PC, and commented on how troublesome it is to register a Microsoft account under Microsoft CEO Nadella Twitter.

To be honest, Musk just has never done anything in China.

Other Microsoft software has also been criticized by Musk.

For example, in November last year, during the “coup” of OpenAI, Musk satirized Microsoft’s cloud conference software Teams, like a veteran politician and Microsoft, who is not suitable for OpenAI: Let these people who pursue feelings use Microsoft Teams to work,Guess how long they can stay?

In early 2023, when Microsoft and OpenAI cooperated strategically, integrated ChatGPT in Microsoft software such as bing and office three-piece sets, and launched Azure ChatGPT based on Microsoft cloud computing.

Musk mocked on Twitter: “Microsoft will become the God of the AI era!”

If we talk about the above complaints, Musk is still sarcastic and restrained. In April 2023, Musk actually fought with Microsoft and said he wanted to sue Microsoft.

After Musk bought Twitter, he made a series of adjustments to Twitter’s API. Then, Smart Campaigns, a social media advertising management service owned by Microsoft, announced that it would no longer support Twitter, which would undoubtedly damage Musk’s business interests.

This incident became the fuse. Instead of debating the ad management service, Musk attacked Microsoft’s illegal use of Twitter data for artificial intelligence training, and said that it is time for prosecution.

It was not found whether Silicon Major was sued in the end, but it is worth noting that this verbal battle happened two days after Musk officially announced his entry into the AI track.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates also failed to escape Musk’s poisonous mouth, and the cause was still AI.

Under a Twitter user’s article about Bill Gates’ overall optimism about AI, Musk replied that he still remembers his early meeting with Gates. Gates had limited understanding of AI at the time, and he still did so now.

The above is part of the war of words between Musk and Microsoft in the past year.Although it is no longer new for Musk to like to criticize people online, even Editor Hu, who is far away from the ocean, has been criticized.

But Musk’s confrontation with Lao Hu is different from Microsoft, and his purpose is too clear:For your ownAITool Grok opens the circuit.

Shortly after Musk sued OpenAI, Twitter’s AI tool Grok1.5 will be released.

To this end, Musk made a lot of other preparations on Twitter.

On February 22, Musk posted a message saying that his Grok is different from the current relatively leading OpenAI and Gemini, and Grok can bring mankind into a bright future.

A few days earlier, on February 18 and 19, Musk recalled the original intention of the establishment of OpenAI on Twitter, and also asked about the deviation of OpenAI’s current intention.

Not long ago, when Google’s Gemini generated a black version of Musk, which caused the problem of “racial discrimination”, Musk took the lead in charge and advertised his own Grok.

Musk, as a “pure” businessman, knows a lot about how to use his influence on social media.

He knew very well that the power of a tweet could instantly attract global attention.Whether by publishing predictions about future technologies or by publicly discussing his business plans, he is able to effectively harness his influence to create topics and traffic for his company and projects.

So it can be said that Tesla’s public relations department is the only one.

Didn’t Ideal CEO Li Xiang learn this way, saving his company more than one billion?

For example, in 2018, Musk tweeted that he was considering privatizing Tesla at $420 per share. The tweet immediately triggered a violent reaction in the market, causing Tesla’s stock price to fluctuate significantly in a short period of time.

In 2021, Musk tweeted: “SpaceX will send a Dogecoin to the moon.”Dogecoin’s price was the first to take the Rockets. In just one hour, Dogecoin rose sharply from about $0.054 per coin to about $0.069 at its highest point, an increase of up to 27%.

Musk also made a lot of money because of this.

So Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI this time is also because he may want to provide some traffic for his Grok.

But to be honest, it’s quite enjoyable to watch big guys quarrel as an ordinary person.
