The first large -scale P2P application on the Internet is Napster (email/SMTP is designed as P2P and self -host, but it is actually federal).Napster’s spiritual successor is the Bittorrent protocol. During its peak, it accounted for ~ 25-35 % of all Internet traffic in the mid-2000s.Both do not need to be licensed: anyone can take care of any files.
The common point between NAPSTER and BitTorrent is file sharing.This is very intuitive.Anyone can host the files, and everyone has uploading and downloading.Therefore, it is meaningful to distribute popular files from nearby people.File sharing is naturally suitable for the P2P architecture.
But this is not the distribution method of most files on the Internet.Instead, the files are mainly distributed through the content distribution network (CDN). These networks are distributed (but not decentralized) to a certain extent and are licensed.The world’s largest CDN has 200-400 access points (POP), which is mainly concentrated in the United States and Europe.
The decentralized CDN (DCDN) based on encryption has always been an obvious opportunity.Theoretically, due to structural cost arbitrage for serious and unused upload bandwidth, DCDN should be able to provide lower latency and more redundancy at a lower cost.There were many early attempts during 2016-2020, but they did not succeed in the end.Since the establishment of Multicoin in 2017, we have been seeking investment DCDN.
On September 16, 2024, we were glad to announce that we conducted a round A investment of $ 10 million to Permissionless Labs, and Permission Less Labs developed PIPE Network.PIPE Network is the first content distribution network (CDN) that does not need to be licensed (CDN) on SolanaEssenceParticipants in this round of financing also include Solana Ventures, Robot Ventures, and our friends Anatoly Yakovenko and Meltem Demirors.We believe that PIPE Network has the potential to become the largest and fastest CDN in the world, because it does not need to be licensed, aims to greatly reduce delay and build the most efficient encryption orbit.
CDN is naturally a performance sensitive application.Through the correct arrangement, decentralized CDN should be able to beat the centralized CDN (CCDN).However, it is very difficult to build an orchestration layer to support that there is no need to permit environment.Building DCDN requires a team with deep knowledge.We believe that we have found a suitable team, and its founder and CEO is David Rhodus.David has a 20 -year career in the field of streaming and big data.Prior to the founding PIPE Network, he was the chief technician of the early streaming company Volar Video.Later, he became an early employee of Elemental TechNologies. The company built the earliest large -scale high -definition broadcast infrastructure for NFL and other similar media assets.Elemental was finally acquired by AWS and is now an indispensable part of its video streaming platform.Subsequently, he became an early employee of Consensys, where he learned from the first principle that he did not need to permit the encryption network.We believe that David and his team have a perfect background, which can perform necessary low -level optimization so that no DCDN is better than the license CCDN.
In addition to the descent of the team, we invest in PIPE because of their focus.Many teams are trying to do a lot of things in the field of decentralized virtual infrastructure network (Devin).For example, CDN has many adjacent functions, including file storage and data calculation.From the moment we encountered David, he shoulders the mission of creating the largest and fastest CDN in the world.As David likes to say, the vision of PIPE Network is the speed response time of more than 3ms.
PIPE Network is about to launch its private test version and open the test network to the PIPE POP node operator.The first public demonstration of PIPE Network will be held at the Breakpoint of the Sorana Annual Developer Conference in Singapore from September 20th to 21st.
