Mantle’s “Escape”: “Switching” from the OP Rollup camp to the ZK camp

Author: Haotian; Source: X, @tmel0211

A few months ago @0xMantleCN completed the technical upgrade from OP Rollup to ZK Validium +EigenDA. Not only did the cost approach the performance of OP, the key is that the 7-day Finality was shortened to less than 1 hour.Sounds like nothing, right?ButWhat if this is Mantle’s “escape” from the OP Rollup camp?Are you just interested?

Why do you say that?

1) Mantle has transformed from a chain that provided liquidity economic incentives for Multi-layer 2 in the past to an institutional-level RWA financial infrastructure service based on Bybit’s off-chain income.

In the past, Mantle provided a liquidity transfer station for L2, relying on mETH staking income to attract liquidity from multiple chains. Now its new institutional-level services include xStocks’ U.S. stock tokenization service and more.

To put it bluntly,All have to suffer from capital circulation efficiency and rely on the participation of institutional funds., but if it is the technical security guarantee of OP Rollup’s 7-day optimistic verification and Fraud Proof fraud proof in the past, there will obviously be big problems;

After all,The “security” of fraud proof is based on the optimistic assumption of not doing evil and post-game punishment, mainly based on the logic of “get on the bus first, talk about problems later”. In the past, layer2’s small ecosystem with tens of millions of TVL and hundreds of millions of TVL could barely support it. However, today with the influx of institutional fund compliance requirements, it is obvious that the logic is untenable.How do you convince institutions like BlackRock and Fidelity to tolerate the assumption of safety within seven days?Are you kidding me?

2) If the reason why OP Rollup was used to sacrifice capital flow efficiency in the past was because it was cheaper, thenWith the reduction of ZK Proof proof cost and the maturity of combination economic verification models such as EigenDA, this “cheap” reason is no longer tenable.

At that time, I chose OP and skipped ZK proof just because ZK technology was immature and too expensive. However, with ZK proof services such as RISC Zero and Succinct, the proof cost has been reduced to less than $0.002, which is even lower than the comprehensive cost of OP Rolllup.The OP Rollup table was overturned by ZK Rollup.

What’s more, EigenDA reduces the DA cost to 1/10 of the normal Blob of Ethereum L1 through off-chain data availability + AVS re-staking economic security model.

So and so,The combination of ZK Validium + EigenDA, Mantle, has lower gas costs, faster transaction speeds, and security finality has been shortened from 7 days to within 1 hour.

Doesn’t this mean that we have completely transcended the original OP era?

above.

Although everyone knew that ZK Rollup is the endgame of layer 2 at the beginning, with the maturity of ZK proof technology and various DA economic verification models,The past technical advantages of the OP blood chain have been challenged., it has not had much impact on OP layer2 chains that still adhere to the layer2 ecosystem and rely on applications to popularize Mass Adoption, such as Arbitrum, Base, etc.

But for financial-oriented chains like Mantle that embrace institutions, transformation is imminent.
