Bankless: What are the decentralized content creation platforms worth paying attention to?

Author: William M. Peaster, Bankless; compiled by: Tao Zhu, Bitchain Vision

I have been writing in the field of crypto since 2017.Since then, I have turned writing into a career and have witnessed the emergence of many great decentralized tools in our ecosystem that meet the needs of creators like me.

I have also seen many authors who came to this field after me, and they have also successfully made their mark.It is always a pleasure to read excellent works from new faces. And I firmly believe that the field of crypto needs more authors, such as analysts, commentators, educators, historians, poets, and more.

Our field has always been craving for engaging views and in-depth discussions, and in my experience, I know there are a lot of people who are wandering around the edge of this field and they have ideas worthy of publication, but just haven’t found the way they want to advance.

What is the good news?If you can overcome the psychological barrier that you show yourself for the first time, there are a lot of great tools available to you when you want to post your content in a crypto-native way.

Of course, the obvious starting point is a decentralized publishing platform. If you are interested in posting long-form content, such as column blogs or long-form guides, these platforms are great.Today, some of these major platforms include:

  • Mirror – Last year, Paragraph acquired Mirror.I would personally recommend Paragraph because all the focus is on it at the moment, but Mirror is still reliable for posting content on top Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) networks, and many top projects still post content here, like Optimism.

  • Paragraph — Paragraph has been around for some time and is more popular than ever due to its growing use in the Base and Farcaster ecosystems (such as the new Paragraph mini app).It is also very friendly to non-fungible tokens (NFT).You can cast the entire article into an NFT, or just a fragment, or embed an external NFT distribution project according to your preferences.

  • Fountain — Fountain is a new, open source publishing platform natively built on the Lens network. If you find yourself investing more in the Lens ecosystem than elsewhere, Fountain is a reasonable choice for you to post long content for now.

  • Fileverse – Fileverse is built on a series of decentralized infrastructure such as Ethereum, Gnosis Chain, Arweave, Interstellar File System (IPFS), Safe and Ethereum Domain Name Services (ENS), and its dDocs platform is like an on-chain version of Google Docs or Notion. If you are looking for a place to archive and share content, this is another interesting option. For example, I archived some of my poems here.

But what if you are a text artist who prefers to publish more short-form and picture-oriented content, and you want to publish your text creation as a real collectible? You also have very good choices in this regard, such as:

  • Highlight – This Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) platform has just launched a brand new market user experience interface that allows you to publish various non-fungible tokens (NFT) projects. If you prefer to publish your actual text works in pictures, and you have a batch of such pictures that you want to publish at one time, at present, this can be said to be the best and most convenient platform for such operations.

  • Rodeo – If you want to maintain a relaxed and casual atmosphere and want to have an Instagram-like experience when posting text and pictures, Rodeo may be your best choice right now.The app has just been priced in USD, which makes it more user-friendly.

  • Zora – Zora is an on-chain creator platform where you can instantly convert any of your content into meme coins. The project has just launched support for text, so if you want to find a more liquid alternative to non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with your own text work, now you can post the short text content in the form of meme coins here.

Of course, posting your content is only half the success. The other half is to let more people see your content, thus creating ideal second-order effects, such as triggering good community discussions, attracting more fans, etc.

In this regard, one way to achieve twice the result with half the effort is to post your content on the chain to on-chain social networks like Farcaster and Lens.

Speaking of Farcaster, the best Twitter-like app for getting started is Warpcast (it will likely be renamed after Farcaster soon, with the same name as the platform), because it has a huge user base and also has a Paragraph mini app that makes it easy for others to read and collect your content.

It is expected that more creator-friendly mini apps will be available here in the coming months, or you can also consider creating or joining a creator channel like Words.

In addition, Farcaster is built on three chains (Ethereum, OP mainnet and Snapchain), while the latest version of Lens is deployed on its exclusive network, the Lens chain. If you want to publish content in the Lens ecosystem, you have to adapt to the environment here.

I’ve mentioned Fountain, it’s like the Lens version of Paragraph. But if you want to find a platform more similar to Warpcast or X (original Twitter) on this network, consider posting content on Hey.If you want to try something more innovative, consider Bonsai’s new smart media studio, which allows you to post AI-powered posts that can evolve over time and generate revenue.

That being said, if you are the type of person who wants to publish work on X, Farcaster, and Lens at the same time, consider publishing apps across platforms like web3 like Firefly or Yup.

Finally, there are various other applications that you may find very useful. For example, Hypersub, it’s like the on-chain version of Patreon, where you can manage subscriptions and send paid content to your most loyal fans.

Then, if an article you posted starts to get attention, consider posting it to Kiwi News, it’s like a crypto-friendly Hacker News section with all sorts of interesting topics related to the chain.

I know what it feels like to feel nervous when publishing my work.I also know what it feels like to impostor syndrome (I always feel that I don’t deserve it) and I still feel this way to this day.But if you want to be a creator in the crypto space, at some point you have to cross that threshold and be brave enough to get involved.

Your biggest obstacle now is probably psychological. You will get better over time, and we are all.But I think it can be said that in the field of crypto, we need more people to stand up and become creators.I hope you can write.Don’t be afraid to start. If you decide to take this step, try these tools and make them work for you.
