A16Z: Why do you lead 28 million US dollars in ESPRESSO network ESPRESSO

Press: On March 21, 2024, A16Z announced that it led the shared sorter network ESPRESSO $ 28 million Series B financing.A16Z partner ALI YAHYA posted an interpretation of why A16Z invests in ESPRESSO.

Ethereum scalability is completely related to rollup -there may be millions of Rollup. Each rollup is a mini ecosystem or an application based on Ethereum security cornerstone.A few years ago, Vitalik proposed this idea for the first time in his famous ROLLUP -centered road map article.Since then, other ecosystem participants, such as ZKSYNC, Optimism, and Polygon, have expanded this vision with the hyperchain route chart (Polygon uses the Agglayer roadmap). For the first time, Ethereum saw a Bright Avenue that can reach the scale of supporting millions of applications and billions of users.

However, this plan is not unlimited. The biggest problem centered on Rollup is the fragmentation of the Ethereum ecosystem.Today, on the main chain of Ethereum, each application (ie, smart contract) can interact seamlessly with other applications. In millions of Rollup worlds, the combination of applications will become more difficult. This is because each separate Rollup is its own independent blockchain. They share the security of Ethereum, but calculations are independent. Each rollup is driven by the so -called “Sequence” (sorter). The sorter is currently a centralized party and performs all calculations on Rollup on the server.

Today, if an application on one Rollup wants to interact with the application on another Rollup, it must be achieved through the Ethereum main chain or bridge. Both methods are very slow, and it makes it difficult for developers to synchronize the status across Rollup (they are asynchronous solutions). In a more ideal case, different Rollup sorters will have a cooperative mechanism to bring a smoother, faster, and cheaper interoperability experience to developers and end users.

1As well asEspressoteam

Before I introduce the Espresso system, I will introduce the team behind it.Before joining A16Z, I knew Ben Fisch and Benedikt Bünz.It was in early 2017 that I worked in Google’s brain. Ben and BENEDIKT were both doctoral students brought by Professor Dan Boneh of Stanford University. When I was under college, I met Professor Dan Boneh. Thanks to DAN, we can connect with each other and provide suggestions for a new encrypted company together. This company is the later ECO and is now one of the A16Z encryption investment portfolios.I still remember that their technology talent gave me a lot of inspiration. For a moment, I even wanted to study a doctorate in cryptography under DAN’s guidance, as they were doing it at that time.

The most impressive thing about Ben is that he can clearly think about the new technologies he is building on each abstract level -from the bottom -level encrypted saying, to the consideration of various businesses and products, until the most widely widespreadSocial impact.I should have expected a long time that he will inevitably transform from the academic character to the founder and CEO of startups.

It turns out that I did not continue to study for a doctorate. On the contrary, I left Google and joined A16Z, becoming a venture capitalist, which is almost the same thing, right? Shortly after that, I met Jill Gunter through the cryptocurrency circle and should be when she was when she was when she was, she should be.When working at Slow Ventures, we soon became friends.Gill has always impressed me that her crazy strategic thinking ability. She has the most keen intuition for the world’s operation and how people may operate in it.Therefore, when she joined the Espresso of Ben, Benniditt and Charles Lu in 2021, it was impossible to notice this.

Through his work in Espresso, I also met Charles. He is very technically mentally minded. Like everyone else in Espresso, he also worked with Dan in Stanford. But the most important thing is that because of his excellent operating ability, he is the perfect partner of Ben, BENEDIKT and Jill.Without Charles, Espresso will not look like now.

Last year, with the limitations of Ethereum based on the ROLLUP roadmap, Ben and his team brought us the most attractive fragmentation problem solutions we have heard.

2As well asEspressosystem

ESPRESSO is building a decentralized network that will be a coordination mechanism for ROLLUP Sequencer. It is a market. In this market, Sequency can sell their block space, or it can also add a unified cross -Rollup transaction sorting mechanism. With Espresso, Rollup will be able to sell block construction rights to block proposals on the Internet. These proposals can also bid multiple Rollup blocks at the same time, becoming a common proposal for multiple chains. This allows ROLLUP to continue to develop independently, and at the same time, it can be more seamlessly operated with other Rollup.

In essence, encryption is a technical movement, which has created better tools for larger -scale human cooperation, especially when the parties are not trusting with each other.Espresso and Ethereum are the perfect reflection of this beautiful ideal.

We are very happy to cooperate with Ben, BENEDIKT, Jill, Charles and Espresso teams to help them bring more seamless interoperability for Ethereum.
