When I was young, I was obsessed with the concept of the market.
The initial idea was that people would go online, post the first few words of their idea, and if people thought the idea was good enough, they would bid for the right to build it (and check out the rest of the post).Builders who want to have relevant experience or willpower to realize their idea will use the market for inspiration, and those who propose the idea will receive a small amount of compensation for sharing.
There are many reasons why this structure doesn’t work. But now, more than ten years have passed, I thinkI’ve found another form of market for ideas: Early VC.Investors who write their first checks for startups can sometimes help actually generate product ideas.Sometimes they are even people who push creativity into the world.Almost as defined by the first investor, future opportunities are unknown. The result is that early-stage venture capitalists often pay off by actively expressing what they want to see achievement.
This is a market of ideas.Early venture capitalists can push their minds into the world with the goal of allowing the right people to see and get inspiration from their minds.Hopefully, Builder will lend a helping hand afterwards, either discussing the idea further or seeking funding.Venture capitalists are well motivated: If the thinking is good, opportunities to invest and share gains can create economic synergy.
One of the core issues of the 12-year-old Alana’s version of thought market is the issue of the belonging of thought.Venture capital solves this problem: Even if a hundred people have the same idea, the benefit is to find and pick out the best people to achieve it.Again, even if others have this idea completely independently, maybe they see you are thinking about a similar concept openly and decide to contact you.Alana, 12, has a market for thoughtful people, rewarding them, regardless of whether the projects are successful or not.Venture capital combines the economic interests of the producers of ideas with actual execution.
Few markets can place “buyers” and “sellers” on the same front. The early VC I like is one of them.
