Musk: Patients implanted with Neuralink brain chips “recovered well”

Neuralink owner Elon Musk saidThe first human patient to implant a Neuralink brain-computer device is “recovered well.”

Musk said in a post on X on Jan. 29 that the patient successfully received the implant on Sunday, Jan. 28.He added that preliminary results show that “neuron spike detection is promising.”

Musk saidNeuralink’s brain implants are designed to help those suffering severe damage or paralysis interact with their phones or computers only through their minds, noting that Neuralink’s first product is called Telepathy.

“Imagine if Stephen Hawking communicates faster than a typist or an auctioneer. That’s the goal.”

Neuralink first began accepting applications for human clinical trials last September, after the company received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its PRIME (Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) study in May 2023. The specific information comes fromA blog post published by the company on September 19.

The initial goal of PRIME research was to create a successful brain-computer interface (BCI) that would allow people to “control their computer cursor or keyboard by just thinking.”

The brain-computer interface is achieved by opening holes in the patient’s skull and implanting a Neuralink device using a surgical robot — a device consisting of “ultra-fine and soft lines” — which is implanted into the brain area that controls the intention to move.

Once the device is implanted, it will act as a recording and transmission device, transmitting data wirelessly to an application, and then decoding the patient’s mind into data on the device.

Neuralink’s safety procedures have been criticized by regulators in recent months, with four U.S. lawmakers asking the SEC to investigate Elon Musk’s alleged false statements regarding the safety of Neuralink implants.

In a now-deleted post published on September 10, Musk said, “No monkey died from Neaurlink implantation.”Legislators insist that this is a deliberate misrepresentation that aims to mislead investors.

At least 12 young monkeys were euthanized after developing debilitating health problems directly associated with Neuralink implants, the Commission on Responsible Medicine Physicians wrote in a Sept. 20 letter to SEC law enforcement.
