A college student’s story of getting rich after encrypting the history of crypto: Rereading Martti’s Satoshi Nakamoto Mail

Source: twitter,@OneKeyCN

In 2009, Martti Malmi, who was still a second-year undergraduate at Helsinki University of Technology, accidentally browsed bitcoin.org, and he emailed Satoshi Nakamoto and wrote: “I would like to help with Bitcoin, if there’s something I can do(I want to help Bitcoin, if there is anything I can do) .”

To be honest, this is really a hasty application email. But from then on, the gears of fate began to rotate.

Martti Malmi, who became Satoshi Nakamoto’s first collaborator and the person he trusted the most, has since been changed by Bitcoin. There has always been a legend in the cryptocurrency circle that college students are getting rich by “All in”, so Martti must be the founder of this legend.

Last month, he released his email history with Satoshi Nakamoto (https://mmalmi.github.io/satoshi/), allowing us to look back at the magnificent history of Bitcoin from a more perspective. Here are some interesting findings from OneKey.

The early operation of Bitcoin is very similar to a startup

Just like most startups back then, they registered the “bitcoin.org” domain name and conducted a lot of discussions about product features, UI (user interface), websites, etc.

What is very different from the entrepreneurial atmosphere at that time was that work was all about email communication, and no one had ever seen his boss “Samoto”.Nowadays, remote work in the crypto industry has become popular, and major crypto companies such as Binance, Paradigm, and our OneKey have adopted global collaboration to varying degrees.

This is the first remote work task that Satoshi Nakamoto assigned to college student Martti Malmi – FAQ (FAQ).Satoshi Nakamoto said that what the website needs most at present is some writing content, and he is “not good at writing, but he is better at writing code.”Original translation: “You can consider building a website on SourceForge, there is no content yet. If you can prepare a FAQ, I can organize the content I answered in the email and forum for you, so that you can get what you want.Information and inspiration needed. ”

Satoshi Nakamoto is obviously a good boss, thinking seriously about the advice of a young college student Martti. Here, Satoshi Nakamoto is discussing the characteristics of “minimizing pallets” and “booting” on the Bitcoin core client like a product manager.Like many computer programs at that time, everyone was competing for users to reduce the “user churn rate”.Of course, Bitcoin adopts this “scheming” to enable more people to run full nodes and make the early network more secure.Original translation:

“Next, I plan to add a feature that allows the Bitcoin program to run automatically when booting on Windows and minimizes the system tray, which can significantly increase the number of online nodes.

In retrospect, you do point out a currently extremely critical missing feature that has the potential to greatly increase the number of nodes.Without automatic startup, it is difficult for us to keep users after their first attempt.Just like the secret to the success of early file sharing networks, it is crucial to have programs run automatically and hide them to the system tray by default.Although in our first version (v0.1.0), it seems inappropriate to introduce this feature because stability has not been guaranteed. But now, as the program has become stable enough, this feature has become a feature that we must add in the next version to ensure that those who are willing to try the new version have a better experience and are willing to continue using it.”

As an “entrepreneur”, Satoshi Nakamoto couldn’t help but complain to Martti about those Internet entrepreneurship projects that “don’t even have code” that are really popular.

In the email below, Satoshi Nakamoto believes that the function of SourceForge can no longer meet the Bitcoin forum and needs to change the forum service provider. At the same time, he complained: “I have seen some projects attract a lot of attention based on the discussion and planning of the forum alone, although they have not started writing any code yet. The discussions on the forum provide an exposure platform for projects, attracting new users,Help solve support problems and sort out the most needed features. (So this forum is very important)”

Satoshi Nakamoto is not exactly the kind of extreme “geek” person in marketing for startups. In this email, he mentioned that the promotional point on the official website is “anonymous”, which makes people feel too suspicious, and they think that it is enough for everyone to know about it privately.

Original translation: “Anonymous, this word sounds a bit suspicious. I think those who want to be anonymous can figure it out on their own without us being hyped. I made some changes to the bitcoin.org homepage. Updating the translation is not really urgent. I tend to continue editing and fixing for a while later, so if they want to update it, it’s better to wait.”

After all, Martti took everything

During email communication, Satoshi Nakamoto repeatedly stated that he did not want to be a person who showed off his face (although the vast majority of people remember it in the end, Satoshi Nakamoto). He encouraged Martti to use his real name and address.Require Martti to use his own credit card/id card to apply for servers and bank accounts.

If you were Martti, would you be scared to “run away”?

Original translation: “I received a $2,000 donation request. But I need your mailing address to get him out. Yes, he (the donor) wants to remain anonymous, so please protect the privacy of the source of the envelope, too.”

In terms of some Bitcoin promotional points, Satoshi Nakamoto also asked Martti to speak on his behalf, and also reminded of some marketing risks.Original translation:

“On the sourceforge website, you can post a lot of opinions that I can’t say on my own website. However, I still feel something is wrong with the idea of ”thinking Bitcoin as an investment.” This statement is a bit of a problem. It’s quite risky, you’d better get rid of this point. It’s okay if the user has such an idea, but we can’t promote it as a selling point.”

It seems nothing wrong to throw the interview task to newcomer Martti.Original translation “There is a blogger who wants to write an article about Bitcoin, but I am not available to answer his questions at the moment. If I introduce him to you, would you be willing to answer his questions? In this way, we may get aVery good link resource. ”

The boss Satoshi Nakamoto suddenly disappeared for a month, but Martti took over the operation of the forum.Original translation: “I’ve been busy with other matters for the past month and a half. I just started downloading my emails since early April. Most of my things have been handled and should be back to Bitcoin soon. I’m glad to seeYou handled something while I was away. Congratulations on completing your first Bitcoin transaction!”

Recharge faith for Martti

Satoshi Nakamoto also foreseeed that if Bitcoin enters the mainstream, it will definitely use a lot of energy. This may have been a very “explosive” view at the time: the banking system was more wasteful than PoW.

“It would be ironic if we end up having to choose between economic freedom and saving resources.

Unfortunately, the proof of work is the only solution I found that can get a peer-to-peer electronic cash system to work without a trusted third party.Even if I don’t use it as an auxiliary way to initially allocate currency, proof of work is still crucial to coordinate the network and preventing duplicate payments.

If it really starts to consume a lot of energy, I think that energy consumption is still less than the traditional banking activities that it is going to replace with labor and resources. It will cost much less than bank fees, with bank fees reaching billions of dollars to pay for all masonry, skyscrapers and useless credit card promotion emails.”

The last email

We all know that on December 12, 2010, Satoshi Nakamoto stopped the forum activity after his last post on the Bitcoin forum to discuss DoS (Denforcement Denial of Service Attack). And this is not the last email from Satoshi Nakamoto.

A month later, in this email sent by Satoshi Nakamoto to Gavin Andresen (censored to Martti), Satoshi reaffirmed that he did not want to participate in any media PR content and interviews. And it can be seen here that Satoshi Nakamoto is very worried that Bitcoin will grow too fast, resulting in the inability to meet various functions, attack defense and other needs. At the same time, they were worried about the fanaticism of public opinion, when some unofficial Bitcoin spokespersons were over-boasting, and even publicity would replace Paypal and even the euro. They hope to emphasize more in the media that Bitcoin is a cutting-edge test, not yet at the level of large-scale application.

In another month, this was the last email from Satoshi Nakamoto to Martti. He arranged some administrator passwords and disappeared again. This farewell will last for 13 years and is likely to never see you again.

Satoshi Nakamoto’s disappearance is full of legend, but in these emails, we see that Satoshi Nakamoto is closer, as if “God” is not out of reach, as if he is right next to us, as if everyone is NakamotoConfused.

Martti’s story is not a mirror, and in the new wave of bull market, how many legends of “college students” will we witness?
