Ethereum’s new vision

Preface

Ethereum has been at a crossroads for the past few years.

The increasing criticism has led to a change in the Foundation’s leadership and is expected to conduct a wider review to increase transparency and engagement and focus more on value capture at the L1 level.

Previously, it was difficult to see executive directors speak in multiple panel discussions at Ethereum meetings. This week, I was very happy to see Tomasz K. Stańczak (co-executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation) participate in as many events and group discussions as possible.

This is really refreshing, and hopefully it indicates the direction of future development.

So…what is Ethereum’s future vision?

How do we ensure that this vision is well executed?

This article provides an overview of Ethereum’s vision.

Target

To have a structured vision, you must start with your goals.

For Ethereum, the main goals are as follows:

1. Return to the spirit of encryption, how to protect privacy and trustless features.

It’s not just about attracting new users, it’s about making sure they can leverage these values and spirits and build them accordingly.

Building, yes, but it must have purpose and values.

2. Ensure that Ethereum remains the safest and most resilient blockchain infrastructure.

This echoes a post by Vitalik about “trillion dollar security”.

Here is part of a broader discussion about security:

  • How to improve the security of Ethereum?

  • How to fully convey this to users?

  • How to ensure that both organizations and users can make the most of this?

The most important thing is:

How do we ensure that all technological developments continue to uphold the core spirit and values of Ethereum? There are no shortcuts, no compromises.

Recently, many people have accused Ethereum of being a little distant from developers.

However, this seems to be changing soon.

In fact, we can expect the Ethereum Foundation to take a slightly more aggressive approach and develop new funding policies.Thomas said this will be used to explore efficient and durable DeFi protocols and strategically allocate them to transition from passive approaches to guided management.

This is just one of a series of challenges that will have a profound impact on Ethereum’s long-term future, including:

  • Regulatory clarity

  • AI adoption

  • Privacy Issues

Among them, a key aspect and recent major trend is the increase in institutional adoption rates.

Ethereum’s future vision is to treat various fields and industries as modular components, make them open source and remove intermediate institutions.

These modules, in turn, will ensure a smooth transition from Web2 to Web3, eliminating friction between institutions.

Imagine health agencies in different countries can open up and contribute to health data repositories. All of this is guaranteed through interactions on the Ethereum chain, ensuring the security and verifiability of these solutions.

The ultimate goal?Allow users to trade all assets around the world on the chain.

challenge

To achieve this, however, Ethereum needs to address some of the major challenges and confusions faced by users.

Therefore, the focus in the future will be on addressing some of the major challenges in on-chain privacy and identity recognition and addressing the threat of AI by building Ethereum as a trusted layer for AI execution.

  • Trusted and neutral.

  • Globalization.

  • Designed to be privacy and secure.

All of this will create a diverse environment, establishing a social structure that allows different actors to collaborate with the ultimate goal of making Ethereum a network that is anti-fragility.

To truly resist centralization, it is necessary to ensure participation from the world and incorporate multiple voices and methods to build a truly global network.

This will enable Ethereum to listen to important issues and give diversity and diversity.

It was also refreshing to hear about the tension between L1 and L2, with the Ethereum Foundation making it clear that there is no opposition between them.

Instead, Ethereum will be more actively guiding how to ensure these L2s reach the second stage, protecting users through Ethereum as the underlying foundation layer.

Last but not least, we have seen the emergence of real-time blockchains such as MegaETH, and other fast networks such as Monad and Hyperliquid.

This also raises issues in interoperability and integration:

  • How to ensure they are connected to the Ethereum mainnet?

  • How to build a 25-ms block time blockchain that inherits Ethereum security parameters?

Therefore, new tools need to be introduced to verify at which levels new challenges can be identified and ensure that clients can integrate with these networks.

This opens up a new creative space for client development.

All Ethereum client teams agree to consume 45 million or even 60 million Gas per block, with the goal of reaching 100 million Gas by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year.

Internal restructuring will help achieve this goal, and the modular team will work to achieve common goals:

  • Extended L1

  • Extended Blob

  • Improve user experience

  • Improve interoperability

You heard it right: Extending L1 (a area that was previously overlooked) is one of these goals.

I personally am optimistic about Ethereum and welcome this awakening and hope to see further progress on it.
