Why do Playmint builds the autonomous world?

Note: David Amor is the CEO of the British web3 game developer Playmint.

In my career, I have developed more than 100 games, covering PC, game consoles, handheld devices and mobile devices.I like such a fact: the game industry rarely remains unchanged for a long time.A VC friend told me that investors would think of hedgehogs who focused on a specific thing in their careers, and the fox would jump to anything they think of interest. I undoubtedly belong to the latter category.

In 2021, we founded Playmint to build a full -chain game. This is a game that is stored on the blockchain logic, status and assets.Among the about 1,000 web3 games that are being built, about 30 are on the full chain.I was asked more than once why I did this, because the blockchain was definitely not designed as a game serverEssence

In 2022, we have been committed to MMO DOWNSTREAM on the full -chain, which has a built -in combination in the game design.Specifically, it allows anyone to add smart contracts without licenses to expand the game functionEssence

This is a game that is eager to become an autonomous world. I think this is the most interesting idea of the game industry over the years, but except for a group of enthusiastic chain game developers, it has been overlooked to a large extent.

For those other than our bubble, when I put the blockchain and the game in the same sentence, I often get cynical reactions, butThe game community on the chain is one of the developers who use blockchain as decentralization technology, rather than one of the technologies that support encrypted capitalism technologyEssenceDecentralization has brought a series of new possibilities to the game industry. For me, the autonomous world is by far the most interesting one.

Most digital worlds are owned and operated by companies that manufacture them.A simple example is Blizzard’s “World of Warcraft”. They operate the game world in real time, create new content, operate servers, adjust, and prohibit players from managing the economy.Blizzard is the manager of World of Warcraft, and they are the gods.

The human world we live in use different models. If there is God, it must be a very light touch. All humans are constrained by the same set of physics. As a person, what you can do is affected by society and economic factors, not God or administrator determines what you can doEssenceWhat you can do in the human world is subject to physical laws and social consensus.

By using decentralized technology, the same model can be created in a digital manner. We created a MMO, which can still exist for a long time after my death, because it exists on the blockchain, rather than the server that needs us to pay the bill every month. It has the “Digital Physics Law”, and the “Digital Physical Law” determines what you can do in the world, and these digital physics laws are immutable. So this is a game world that exists forever, and the rules will never changeEssence

People in that world (including us) can add code to expand the function of the game without licenses. This may be new tasks, enemies who want to fight, tribal systems, markets, and game functions.Or anything is considered to be useful or interesting, as long as it follows the bottom digital physical laws, it is effective.

If this sounds like Mods, then a fundamental difference is that MODS destroys the player’s experience, that is, different players will eventually get different experiences. The autonomous world allows players to introduce new experiences and functions in a shared world. This world is like our human world. As players add new things they want to see, they continue to developEssence

No need to entangle Blizzard to add functions to the game; don’t worry that the server will be closed due to the expiration of the license agreement; the rules of the game will never be set in the code; the review system in the game is managed by social consensus.

It was an autonomous world.Building it involves many new technologies and creative problems. The current results are quite low -guarantee, but when the game industry can use some new ideas, it opens the door for a new game experience.
