Bitcoin Core Developer: Runes “take advantage of design flaws”

Bitcoin core developer Luke Dashjr criticized the Runes protocol, saying it exploits basic design flaws in blockchain networks.

In a post on April 26 X (formerly known as Twitter), Dashjr describes the differences in how the Ordinal Inscriptions and Runes protocols interact with the network. He clarified,Although Ordinals exploits vulnerabilities within the blockchain, the Runes protocol runs within the framework of network design flaws.

He further explained:

“Ordinals is a 9-vector attack that exploits the core vulnerability of Bitcoin, and the runes “just” a 5-vector attack that actually technically follows “rules.”

Ordinals is a novel form of digital assets similar to NFT, etched on Satoshi (the smallest unit of Bitcoin).Their appearance last year marked Bitcoin’s entry into the NFT space, sparking significant interest from the crypto community.

Runes, on the other hand, are alternative tokens launched on the day Bitcoin completes its fourth halving. After the release, the tokens severely blocked the network, causing a surge in transaction fees.

It is worth noting thatDashjr has long been critical of both asset types, claiming they deviate from the core principles of BTC and fuel blockchain spam.Last year, he marked Ordinals as bugs and took the lead in taking steps to fix these issues with bug fixes.

Filter rune transactions

In view of his objection, Dashjr proposed a method to filter rune transactions.

He said:

“To filter rune spam with Bitcoin Knots or Bitcoin Core, the only way to do this is to set datacarriersize=0 in your bitcoin.conf file (or just set the equivalent GUI option in Knots).

However, early signs indicate that the miner did not follow his advice.Ocean Mining, a decentralized mining pool with Dashjr as CTO, recently dug out the first half-block, with more than 75% of transactions coming from the Runes protocol.

In their defense,Some miners are willing to process these transactions because of the rich income brought by rune transactions.
